What is taught in the Science sessions?
The key areas of the new national curriculum are covered, such as; Light, electricity, animals including humans, living things and their habitats, forces and magnets, earth and space, properties and changes of materials, states of matter, sound, plants and working scientifically.
How is it taught?
I believe science is all about conducting investigations, experiments and observations. We would start with one topic and I would introduce the scientific vocabulary needed for that specific topic, this could be using flash cards, diagrams or online software. I would then support your child in working out how we could investigate further. For example magnets, I would introduce a diagram of magnets and have a conversation with your child about what they already know. I would then scaffold their learning and steer them on a path to discover magnet and non-magnetic objects. We would discuss how we can work scientifically, what equipment we would need, what method to use, how we would keep the investigation fair and how we would display the results.
How does this help my child?
The tutoring sessions I offer stem from the new national curriculum objectives, this means they will be in line with your child’s day to day learning at school and will hopefully give them more confidence, understanding and success in their classrooms as well. The science sessions will enable your child to use science vocabulary confidently, to conduct scientific experiments assertively, to record results accurately and finally, to interpret the results.
The first consultation/taster session is 100% free! Here I will understand what sessions you think will benefit your child the most, (ie a particular focus or a mixture of subjects) what your child’s interests are, and your child will have the opportunity to take part in some of the different activities available. You can book the next session there and then, or you can take some time to check your diary and get back to me. It’s up to you how many sessions your child has; whether they are weekly, fortnightly, whatever works for you and your child, I’m flexible. For a one to one session, it’s £20 per hour. For a two to one session, it’s £30 per hour.
